I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list — Susan Sontag, US writer, critic, activist
Ever since I saw the film, Buena Vista Social Club, documenting Cuba's famous and unrivalled music scene, I realised there was a whole world outside of my hometown and country. Whilst US writer, Mark Twain, famously argued that travel can prevent bigotry and narrow-mindedness by opening one's eyes to the world outside the bubble in which we may live, US writer Maya Angelou argued: “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”
On my travels, I use photography to capture moments I don't want to forget in places I have been privileged to live or visit. In my work as a teacher-researcher, I use photography to delve into places, ideas, and topics in a way that does not rely on language, while simultaneously being a spring-board for discussion.
